This minigame brings an awareness of the concept of “opposition”. This is a fundamental concept in endgames involving active kings.
The kings start at diagonally opposite corners. White moves first and wins by occupying the starting square of the opposing king or f8. Similarly, Black wins by occupying the starting square of the opposing king or c1. Kings cannot stand next to each other. The following diagrams illustrate how the game might go. The key to winning this minigame is achieving the “opposition” whereby your king forces the opponent’s king to retreat from where it wants to be. In this case, the black king wants to stand between the white king and the target squares.
Black is forced to retreat.
Black moves to the side and White follows it.
Black steps to the side and the white king advances.
Black has been forced back by one rank and the process continues.
Finally the black king must move aside and white wins
